Workplace Safety Tips
Workplace safety tips are most effective when they’re incorporated into the day-to-day culture of a company. While FASTEX’s training programs cover each of these subjects in depth during its various programs, here are some general Workplace Safety Tips to keep in mind:
When an employee discovers a potential workplace safety hazard, he or she should:
- Ensure that everyone else in the work area is aware of the problem.
- Notify his or her supervisor where applicable.
Next, the supervisor should
- Act on any issue that hasn’t been resolved since the initial reporting.
- File any documents or reports about the issue.
- Follow up. Merely telling someone of a problem does not a guarantee a satisfactory resolution.
Falls are the leading cause of injury in the workplace; specifically, due to improper lifting techniques. The procedure for proper lifting includes:
- Planning the lift by assessing the object, flooring, and potential hazards
- Wearing proper shoes (nonskid) and ensure firm footing before beginning the lift
- Keeping knees bent, stomach tightened, and back straight
- As you lift smoothly without twisting your body; point your feet in the direction of your destination, and push (if possible) rather than pull.
In regard to possible fires in the workplace, FASTEX’s best workplace safety tip is to stay calm, and execute your fire safety plan. In order to prepare your employees properly for a real fire, a solid workplace fire drill will integrate these actions:
- Specified routes and alternate routes for exiting safely from a smoky or burning building
- A plan for where to meet once everyone is out of the building, and
- The proper use a fire extinguisher.
At a minimum, you should conduct fire drills at least twice a year; more if required by your industry. Let FASTEX provide its expertise on these and dozens of other workplace safety tips by contacting us for a free estimate for a consultation with your management.
